More and more in my coaching sessions and moments of personal reflection joy shows up as a necessary component for creating and experiencing the life we truly desire. Joy in its truest form is the experience and expression of love. And as an expression of love, which we are, joy is our most authentic experience and expression of our Self.
Remember, when you are born, you were announced to the world as a “bundle of joy”. So what happened?

If we are to live in full expression of who we truly are then joy must be at the heart of our Self expression. Joy is an “attribute” of our Soul that we have the opportunity to bring to life and therefore experience. It seems that all too often though, if not all of the time, we wait for an event or experience to bring us joy, when in Truth, we bring joy to the experience.
In fact, we bring joy to life. Looking at this as a double entendre, this means that not only do we bring joy to life as our contribution to the experience of life for our Self and others, but we bring joy to life by giving it the opportunity to be expressed through our Self expression.
If joy is something that most of us want to bring to and experience in life, why then do we withhold its expression? In fact, why do we deny anything in life for which we have a deep desire to experience and express?
And what does any of this have to do with “Jeremiah being a Bullfrog”?
I believe this can be addressed by reviewing three of the many characteristics of joy.
Characteristic 1. Joy resides in you as an expression of you at your core. It is not dependent upon any act or event, although an experience can certainly elicit joy, if even a simple smile. Joy awaits your expression.
Characteristic 2. Joy is an expression of love and therefore omnipresent. Joy exists whether we are conscious of it or not. It doesn’t eliminate sorrow, grief, sadness or pain, for these are all integral to the human experience. However, it is the experience of God’s grace while moving through difficult times. Joy can be experienced and expressed in the face of adversity through the knowing that we are loved beyond measure.
Characteristic 3. Joy begets joy. When joy is what you express, joy is what you experience. When you are being joyful you elicit the experience and expression of joy in others. When others are experiencing and expressing their joy this in turn elicits the expression and experience of joy in you, all of which is sent out into the world.
How do we create the experience and expression of joy?
- Do more of what elicits the expression of joy in you and less of what doesn’t. I know this sounds simplistic, however each one of us has “authority” over our choices and can choose to remain in certain environments or not. And if it is not practical to leave a specific environment then it is our choice to engage in the environment with joy and enthusiasm. This doesn’t mean you will like the environment any more than before; it becomes more “enjoyable”. Joy is our approach towards all experiences of life.
- Create and look for opportunities that allow for the expression and experience of joy. What do you like to do? What are you good at? What activities in which you become engaged cause you to lose all sense of time and Self? For what are you most passionate? Consciously look for and participate in these activities, remembering that it is not the activity itself that is the source of joy, it is you.
- Live in full expression of who you truly are. This is our purpose in living. To “joyfully” explore, experience and express our Self in as many ways as possible and in so doing we extend joy and love into the world.
And understand, no, absolutely know, that life provides everything we need when it is most needed to live in full expression. Now what could be more joyful?
- “Be the experience of what you desire to see in the world.” If more joy is what you believe would serve this world, then be joyful in who you are and all that you do.
We take life too seriously and lose our sense of awe, wonder and curiosity. There is a reason for the statement, “be as a child.” By this is meant to be in that state of awe and wonder no matter what is happening in your life. Be curious, excited and passionate about all aspects of life. Revisit that bundle of joy that was you upon entering this world.
Oh, I almost forgot. Let’s get back to Jeremiah. Well, Jeremiah was a bullfrog. He was a good friend of mine. Although I never understood a single word he said I helped him drink his wine. And he always had some mighty fine wine.
Singing…Joy to the world. All the boys and girls. Singing joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea, Joy to you and me! Joy to the World!
Until next time, joyously yours,
